Crampton reminiscences, ca. 1938-1938.

Summary: Letters, written to the Arizona Historical Society, between October and November, 1938, reminiscing about the names and owners of the stage stations in southern Arizona, events that occurred related to the stations, and distances between them. Also present is a three-page manuscript by Crampton about a cattle round-up in the Apache Mountains of Gila County, 1894, and the death of a cowboy by heart attack.

Biographical note: Pioneer; John Crampton's step-father, James A. Moore, came to Arizona in 1866 and owned the overland stage, for the Overland Mail Company, between Yuma and Tucson as well as operated Maricopa Station until 1878 when the railroad arrived. Crampton assisted his step-father in the business and was said to be the first white child to come into the Salt River Valley. He was later active in mining and ranching in the Globe area, married Rosella Snelling and had four children. ...

The Butterfield Overland Mail Company, organized in 1857, carried mail between St. Louis and San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War forced it to move north to the central overland route. It was known as the Central Overland and Pike's Peak Express Company until it was reorganized and Gen. Bela M. Hughes was elected president of the Overland Mail Company in 1861.
